Diverticula are small pouches that can form as bulges in the lining of the digestive system. Most often, they are found in the colon. They are especially common in people over the age of 40. Diverticulitis occurs when a pouch becomes inflamed or infected, which can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea and a drastic change in bowel movements. While mild diverticulitis can be treated with changes in your diet, extra rest and antibiotics, severe or recurring diverticulitis may require surgery. Our surgeons will provide colon resection, using minimally invasive surgery when possible, to fix diverticulitis.
